A Few More Rieslings

Gunderloch
Nackenheim Rothenberg Auslese
1997 – Rheinhessen
$25.00
Shane’s Notes

This Riesling has an aroma of pears. The dominant flavors include honey and melon with a touch of lemon on the finish. The palate is not complex but extremely concentrated and almost syrupy. Imbibing this Riesling is like drinking liquid candy. It’s another winner from Gunderloch.

Chateau St. Michelle
2004 Riesling
$5.99
Shane's Notes

This Washington state Riesling is spritzy and includes a light, peachy flavor with a hint of citrus. It has good acidity with a short, clean finish. The palate lacks the creaminess and/or richness and concentration of a good German Riesling. It is decent and drinkable, but we’d much rather pay the $18 - $25 for an “inexpensive” German Riesling

I'm not much of a Riesling drinker, but I tend to prefer the Washington Rieslings over the German ones since the locals tend to be less syrupy... Like Hogue's Gewürztraminers, sometimes I want these traditionally sweet grapes to accompany savory meals.

My favorite Chateau Ste. Michelle wine right now is not in their selection of whites, but rather their Cold Creek Syrah (my remaining bottles are from 2001), which has a lot of complexity, though, like most Washington and California reds trying to balance the sugar, is just at the edge of comfort on the alcohol level, at 13.9%. Of course, buying takes a bit of a commitment at about $29 at the winery.
